Bay Leaf, Milk, and Honey Remedy for Coughs and Congestion: A Must-Remember Recipe!

A cough can be very uncomfortable and sometimes even debilitating, especially when it keeps you up at night. You can prepare this tried-and-true folk remedy that provides relief and ensures a restful night’s sleep.

To make this drink, you’ll need a few ingredients that you may already have at home.

A cough is the body’s reaction to irritation of the mucous membrane, causing muscle spasms and contractions that result in a characteristic sound.

It’s most often caused by a cold but can also be due to smoking, allergies, or exposure to polluted air. However, it can also be a symptom of more serious diseases. If a cough persists for more than 7 days, it’s advisable to consult a doctor.

Nevertheless, there’s no harm in trying this natural remedy when you experience the first symptoms.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 teaspoon of butter
  • 1 cup (8 fluid ounces) of milk
  • 1 tablespoon of dried sage
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric

Here’s how to prepare it:

  1. Pour the milk into a pot, add the dried sage and bay leaves.
  2. Heat the mixture over low heat and let it simmer for an additional 2 minutes after it starts to bubble.
  3. Turn off the heat, add the butter, and let it dissolve in the milk with the lid on.
  4. Strain the mixture through a sieve, add a teaspoon of honey, and half a teaspoon of turmeric.
  5. Drink this concoction slowly before going to bed. It can be consumed by both children and adults.

This drink can help make it easier to cough up mucus and soothe irritated mucous membranes.

The healing properties of the ingredients are as follows:

  • Sage: Sage is known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Sage tea can help relieve cold symptoms, including a sore throat and cough. Sage boiled in milk primarily treats dry coughs and helps clear mucus from the lungs. Consuming it before bedtime can improve sleep quality.
  • Honey: Honey is often used to soothe coughs and throat irritation. When combined with warm milk, it’s an effective remedy against coughs.
  • Turmeric: This spice is gaining popularity worldwide and is often used in combination with milk in a drink known as “golden milk.” Turmeric, when combined with honey, is better absorbed and enhances the overall antibacterial and antiviral properties of the drink.
